Course Description

This course will touch on several of the most pertinent and impactful trends that are developing in the blockchain and cryptoasset space that are most important for CPA's and accounting professionals to be aware of going forward. Specifically, this presentation will focus on the following trends and directions. Firstly, the pivot and shift from public/permissionless to private/permissioned blockchains, including justifications as to why this large has occurred and accelerated. Second, a discussion and analysis around cryptoassets including stablecoins and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) will be held, including an explanation as to how these classes of cryptoassets are differently. Lastly, a review and discussion around recent regulatory updates and developments, including the September 2020 guidance from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) will be held with an emphasis on implications for practitioners. 

Learning Objectives:


  • Recognize the differences between types of blockchains, including the implications for enterprise adoption 

  • List the various types of cryptocurrencies backed by assets, including stablecoins and CBDCs 

  • Determine the implications of private blockchain trends, and asset-backed cryptocurrencies, for the accounting profession and client advisory services

Sean is an assistant professor at the City University of New York – Lehman College. He serves on the Advisory Board of the Wall Street Blockchain Alliance, where he chairs the Accounting Working Group. Sean sits on the Advisory Board of Gilded and is a strategic advisor to the Central Bank Digital Currency Think Tank. Sean also serves as an Advisor to Crescent City Capital, a cryptoasset investment fund.

Sean is a widely recognized expert in the areas of blockchain and cryptoassets, especially as they connect to accounting and financial services. His thought leadership is sought after by academic and industry organizations, and includes his efforts to develop and teach the first ever courses focusing on blockchain and crypto at Lehman College beginning in 2021.

Sean has also been named one of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting, and has been named a past winner of the NJCPA Ovation Award for Innovation. He has also been named a 40 under 40 in the accounting profession from 2017-2021 by CPA Practice Advisor and the NYSSCPA in 2021. Sean was named on the NJBIZ Power 50 in Accounting in 2021 & 2022. He was also awarded the Outstanding Young CPA of the Year Award by the AICPA in 2022.
